Annecy

A medieval and sporting town

Annecy in short

Why go to Annecy?

Let us describe the setting: a lake 26 km in size, considered to be the purest urbanised lake in Europe. Clear, cool waters set against a backdrop of majestic, snow-capped mountains. Welcome to Lake Annecy. On its shores are many small villages, each more authentic than the last, and the town of Annecy, capital of Haute-Savoie. Considered a "museum town", Annecy's medieval past shines through in its vaulted stone walls and cobbled pedestrian streets. This undeniably charming town is known as the Venice of the Alps, and with good reason: the canals that run through the town are reminiscent of the romanticism of the Italian city.

Water sports on Lake Annecy

The 14km-long lake is packed with water-based activities. Wakeboarding, stand-up paddling, canoeing and water skiing are all on the menu. If water sports aren't your cup of tea, there's plenty for beach lovers and swimmers too. Lake Annecy has many beaches. Some have children's play areas, restaurants and shady spots for family picnics. The waters of Lake Annecy flow directly down from the surrounding mountains. They are clean and cool, perfect for cooling off on a hot summer's day.

Annecy's historic centre is a museum in itself. The vaulted arcades of the town centre take you from history to history as you explore the town's monuments. Discover the town's museum castle, built hundreds of years ago, and visit the churches and basilicas that bear witness to the religious revolution that took place in Annecy several centuries ago.

Annecy celebrates

Annecy is a fun-loving town. Initiated by an association of Italian teachers, Annecy's Venetian carnival attracts thousands of costumed enthusiasts every year. In the streets of the historic centre, festival-goers dress up in costumes as mysterious as they are incredible, while the famous Lake Festival brings together fireworks and music in a spellbinding night-time spectacle at the beginning of August. Festivals are held several times a year. Be sure to visit the Annecy tourist office website for the dates of these magical events.

Walks around Annecy

The mountain ranges surrounding Lake Annecy offer panoramic views. Take a deep breath of fresh air on the educational trail at the Bout-du-Lac nature reserve, a wonderful place to teach children about Savoie's biodiversity. For lovers of altitude, the trail from the Chalet des Auges takes you 1,700 metres above the lake. If you'd like to take a stroll around Lake Annecy, there's a cycle path around the lake. Practical information

How much does a week in Annecy cost?

Because Annecy is a popular destination for tourists and local visitors, prices for a week's holiday can quickly soar. As a guide and using average prices, we have calculated a budget for a week in Annecy for a family with two children.

Accommodation in Annecy for a family of 4

In general, accommodation for a family of 4 costs between €200 and €300 per night. Most of the time, children sleep on a sofa bed. If you want two bedrooms, you'll need to allow a little more per night. Assuming that one night's accommodation costs €250 for 4 people, a week's accommodation costs around €1,500 for 2 adults and 2 children.

Eating out in Annecy

Few families can afford to eat out at every meal on their holiday. So we've calculated a catering budget based on the assumption that you'll eat in a restaurant once a day. The other meal may be cooked in your accommodation or a sandwich for a picnic. On average, not including drinks, we've calculated €35 for a restaurant meal for an adult and around €20 for a child. The daily budget is around €110 for a family of 4. A seven-day holiday with one restaurant meal a day therefore costs €770.

Daily activities

Of course, Annecy is full of free activities, including beaches, swimming, hiking and free visits to museums. However, it's a good idea to budget a little for activities such as bike hire, wakeboarding or paragliding - who knows! In fact, we've worked out an average budget of €75 for two adults and two children. For a full week's holiday in Annecy, the budget for your activities comes to €525.

Total for a week in Annecy for two, including accommodation, meals and activities

Including accommodation, restaurants and activities, our average budget for a family of 2 adults and 2 children is €2,795. This budget is indicative, based on average prices.
