Discover Annecy's religious buildings

The scene of several seizures of power, wars and religious revolutions, Annecy is brimming with buildings that bear witness to the turbulent religious history of the Haute-Savoie region. As you walk through the medieval town, you can stop here and there to visit little pieces of history. The Château museum, Saint-Pierre cathedral, Visitation basilica and Notre-Dame-de-Liesse church are just some of the exceptional places to visit. These monuments are free to visit and can be combined with a tour of Annecy's old town. The architecture is breathtaking and the history of these sites is often tragic. Basilica of the Visitation, a church in the middle of the mountains

History

The history of the Basilica of the Visitation began in 1909 with the construction of a monastery for nuns, and the church was completed in 1930 by an Italian architect who won the second Grand Prix de Rome. The 72-metre-high bell tower was built in 1930, in reinforced concrete and in a rather free, neo-Romanesque style. The bell tower is decorated with an impressive 7-metre-high bronze cross. The bell tower is certainly the most impressive part of the basilica, especially when illuminated at night. The basilica is dedicated to the Order of the Visitation, a female monastic order of pontifical right, founded in 1610 by François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal.

Today, you can visit the basilica. It includes the Salesian Museum, which recounts and perpetuates the history of the Visitation Order and its founders, Jeanne de Chantal and François de Sales. In addition, a memorial to Saint-François de Sales has been set up on the premises of the former Visitation monastery, next to the present-day church of Saint-François, in the historic centre of Annecy. Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, a historic monument in France

History

This cathedral has been listed as a French Historic Monument since 1906. And with good reason: this imposing building clad in white stone is an architectural feat from the Renaissance period, built around the 16th century. Although the cathedral was inspired by Roman architecture, the large rose above the entrance is typically Gothic. Originally a convent, the church became an episcopal see before becoming the temple of the goddess Reason, a sect with philosophical roots that wanted to return sovereignty to the people. Since 1822, the church has been a cathedral and has undergone several renovations, notably to the bell tower.

Visits

To visit the cathedral, take rue Jean Jacques Rousseau, a stone's throw from the old prisons. The cathedral is right in the historic centre of Annecy. It is difficult to admire the whole of the cathedral from the outside, so we advise you to go around the church to the right to reach a square with a forum. Ask the Annecy tourist office about concerts held in the cathedral. A classical music concert is undoubtedly the best way to discover this magical religious building.

Opening times

The cathedral welcomes visitors from 8 am to 7 pm every day.

👛 Admission

Admission is free.

We recommend between 30 and 45 minutes to visit Saint Peter's cathedral.

Notre-Dame-de-Liesse church in Annecy, in the historic centre of the town museum

History

The church of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse was built between 1360 and 1394 under the direction of the Counts of Geneva. In 1793, the revolutionary municipality decided to turn it into the Place de la Liberté, to host popular gatherings. The square became the centre of political life in Annecy. The church was partially destroyed. Finally, the current church was built between 1846 and 1851. The new building retains the original bell tower and a Gothic window in the south wall. The building is also known as Paroisse Sainte-Jeanne-De-Chantal.
