History
The history of the Basilica of the Visitation began in 1909 with the construction of a monastery for nuns, and the church was completed in 1930 by an Italian architect who won the second Grand Prix de Rome. The 72-metre-high bell tower was built in 1930, in reinforced concrete and in a rather free, neo-Romanesque style. The bell tower is decorated with an impressive 7-metre-high bronze cross. The bell tower is certainly the most impressive part of the basilica, especially when illuminated at night. The basilica is dedicated to the Order of the Visitation, a female monastic order of pontifical right, founded in 1610 by François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal.
