The history of Corralejo

In the 17th century, Corralejo was a port for pirates and smugglers. Many goods were traded here without paying the government taxes imposed. Later, around the 19th century, the port was transformed into a fishing village. The village remained as small as its neighbour, Majanicho, until 1950. At this point, the first foreign developers began buying up plots of land to build apartment blocks: the first holiday flats appeared.

Since then, things have changed radically. Over the years, the village has been transformed into a cosmopolitan seaside resort: huge, touristy and bustling. However, the soul of Corralejo still lies in its historic centre, the plaza pùblica.

The seaside resort of Corralejo today

Corralejo is Fuerteventura's largest seaside resort. After the capital, Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo is the island's second largest town. Located in the far north, opposite the island of Lobos, the seaside resort is very popular with tourists.

Corralejo is the holiday home of many Spaniards, but it is also the meeting point for travellers from all over the world. In fact, the seaside resort is an ideal place for a family, a couple or a group of friends to enjoy all the activities that Fuerteventura has to offer, for both children and adults. These include beaches, spas and bars, as well as quad biking, kite surfing, snorkelling and more. Nature lovers will also find something to suit them, with walks along the sea.

To the south of the city, the Corralejo Dunes Park, classified as a nature park, faces the volcanic island of Lobos. This 1670-hectare Saharan landscape is a must-see on Fuerteventura, reminding us that Africa is not far away. In perpetual motion, kilometres of dunes stretch as far as the eye can see before the turquoise ocean. Numerous beaches and small coves await you, far from the hustle and bustle of the seaside resort. You can go there for a sunrise or a sunset, to sunbathe in the simplest of clothes or to enjoy the unique experience of being in the middle of the desert.

Corralejo's beaches are renowned for their fine sand and turquoise waves. They are all equipped with a lifeguard post, showers and toilets. You can hire snorkelling equipment or take a surfing lesson, weather permitting. We recommend Playa de Los Verilitos for its bars, Playa del Medio for its surfing and Playa de Puerto Remedio for its tranquillity.

Shopping in the town centre

If you want to go shopping in Corralejo, you can venture into the large El Campanario shopping centre or take a stroll along the Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen shopping street. It's teeming with luxury boutiques and surf shops.

Corralejo is the departure point for boats to the island of Lobos, just 2 km off the coast. It's also the ideal starting point for a trip to the nearby island of Lanzarote, renowned for its incredible volcanic landscapes. Ferries take you there in just 12 minutes on the Fred. Olsen Express, or in 30 minutes on the longer but cheaper Armas. The island of César Manrique is waiting for you!
