Les 2 Alpes: 5 days of cycling on legendary roads

The resort of Les 2 Alpes and the surrounding area is a real playground for cycling enthusiasts. The legendary cols used by the Tour de France, the beautiful villages and exceptional panoramas make for a great programme for this cycling getaway. Whether you're a cycling enthusiast or a cyclist who wants to push your limits on some breathtaking roads, get ready to warm up your calves on the most beautiful roads in the Alps. But you can add the feat of crossing all these passes to your list of races to have done at least once in your cycling life, and you'll have earned your sports massage when you return to the resort in the evening. And a glass of génépi too, of course. If you're a beginner cyclist, you may find it reassuring to be accompanied by a car, or to take the car or gondola for the outward journey and return, or to take the easier routes, bearing in mind that it's difficult to avoid the gradient in the mountains.

Day 1: Lac du Chambon

There are two options for this first day of cycling: a round trip from Vénosc to Les 2 Alpes via Lac de Chambon (54km) or a one-way trip.

If you're based in Les 2 Alpes, a cable car will take you to Vénosc in 8 minutes with your bike for the start of the route.

After a 3.27km ride, you'll cross the Vénéon, the jewel of the Oisans, and one of the most beautiful torrents you'll see in the Alps.

At km 17, you'll arrive at Lac de Chambon and admire the magnificent view of its turquoise waters.

After 20 km, you arrive at the Fontaine de Lans, a welcome watering hole in the middle of the climb up to Les 2 Alpes.

At km 26.6, you're in Les 2 Alpes. You can stop here or return to Vénosc to take the gondola, which of course doubles the number of kilometres covered.

Day 2: The Col du Galibier

Things are about to get serious, and your thighs are not going to be disappointed on this legendary route beloved of the Tour de France (crossed more than 60 times since 1911). Three difficulties for more challenge:

  • 86km of road,
  • a steep climb of 2770 metres
  • and an altitude of over 2600 metres!

You'll have a second chance to admire the Lac de Chambon, which you'll ride alongside for a few kilometres, so taking a short break for refreshments at the lakeside restaurant La Cabane is ideal, or continuing on to the village of La Grave and finishing at the top of the Col du Galibier. You'll have an incredible view over Savoie and Mont Blanc.

Be sure to check whether the pass is open (generally only between June and September) and to bring an extra jacket, even in high summer, as well as a full water bottle.
