Strolling around the old port of Cassis

"Qu'a vist Paris, se noun a vist Cassis, pou dire: n'ai rèn vist". The famous words of French writer Frédéric Mistral still resonate on the cliffs of this Mediterranean village: "If you have seen Paris and not Cassis, you can say: I have seen nothing".

Nestling between the white rock cliffs of southern France and the Mediterranean Sea, Cassis used to be a quiet little fishing village.

Today, Cassis is one of the most beautiful towns on the French Riviera, just a few kilometres from the metropolis of Marseille. In the old port, you'll find colourful wooden "pointus", olive trees, artisan chocolate makers, ice-cream parlours and a host of restaurants that have retained the soul of the fishing port.

Come and relax and refresh yourself on one of the port's terraces, admiring the view of the majestic Cap Canaille and the Mediterranean Sea.

A walk around the port of Cassis

Straight out of a Marcel Pagnol film, the old port of Cassis is a reminder of the gentleness and joie de vivre of Provence. In the mornings, the fishermen bring in their fish-laden pointus, small wooden boats painted in bright colours, to sell their freshly caught produce at the auction.

Old-timers sip their coffee on the terrace, while the sun rises behind Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in Europe. Whatever the occasion, the port of Cassis radiates tradition, know-how and character, making it the ideal place to enjoy a gourmet break on the terrace of one of the restaurants or take a stroll while watching the boats.

The Cassis lighthouse, a walk along the sea

From the port, you can walk for a few minutes to see the town's lighthouse. At the mouth of the harbour, on the south side, it faces the Mediterranean Sea. The circular bench at its base gives you a great vantage point from which to observe Cap Canaille.
