The Gold Museum isn't just a showcase to be admired, it's also a place to learn more about Peruvian civilisations. These unique objects bring together different eras and show how the ancient inhabitants of Peru lived their daily lives. A visit to the museum shows that jewellery and ornaments in general have for centuries represented a social function as well as a sense of belonging to a group.
In the museum's showcases, you can see gold bracelets, necklaces, masks and headdresses from the Chimu culture, for example. Gold had a sacred value for the Incas, who associated it with the God of the Sun. The exhibition also includes objects used in everyday life, such as gold crockery. In all, **8,000 gold pieces* show the customs and beliefs of Peruvian civilisations over more than 1,600 years.
