Discover the Peruvian Gold Museum

As dazzling as it is fascinating, Peru's Gold and Weapons Museum is well worth a visit. Comprising thousands of gold coins and artefacts, the museum traces the history of Peru through its objects. It covers several eras, from the pre-Columbian era, when various civilisations such as the Chimu, the Moche and the Incas succeeded one another, to Pizarro's conquest. Opened in 1960, the museum exhibits a collection of objects belonging to the diplomat and collector Miguel Mujica Gallo.

Thousands of objects dating from the pre-Columbian period

The Gold Museum isn't just a showcase to be admired, it's also a place to learn more about Peruvian civilisations. These unique objects bring together different eras and show how the ancient inhabitants of Peru lived their daily lives. A visit to the museum shows that jewellery and ornaments in general have for centuries represented a social function as well as a sense of belonging to a group.

In the museum's showcases, you can see gold bracelets, necklaces, masks and headdresses from the Chimu culture, for example. Gold had a sacred value for the Incas, who associated it with the God of the Sun. The exhibition also includes objects used in everyday life, such as gold crockery. In all, **8,000 gold pieces* show the customs and beliefs of Peruvian civilisations over more than 1,600 years.

Objects representing technological advances

As well as gold, other metals and materials seemed precious to pre-Columbian civilisations. The museum exhibits textiles, ceramics, copper, silver, wood and precious stones. These objects belonged to several cultures, from the Chimu, Moche and Vicus to the Incas and the civilisations of Lima and Lambayeque.

These peoples were ingenious when it came to technology. These astonishing advances are also evoked in the museum through objects representing mining techniques, transformation through metallurgy, or confection through goldsmithing.

A collection of 20,000 weapons from different eras

The museum's second function is to display over 20,000 weapons from different eras. This journey through time shows how weapons have evolved and been stylised over the centuries, with the addition of marble, wooden or gold inserts, as with revolvers. In the display cases, you'll find historic objects of great value. In addition to the weapons, there are war uniforms, mounts and armour on display. A complete museum that spans the ages.
