The Jean-Talon market: one of the biggest in North America

According to the Corporation de gestion des marchés publics de Montréal (CGMPM), the Jean Talon market is the largest open-air market in North America. It's located not far from Little Italy, a lively, Italian-inspired neighbourhood. The market is a gourmet and refined gathering. Producers come from all over Quebec to showcase their creations. The produce is fresh, seasonal and local.

There are plenty of restaurants to tempt visitors and Montrealers alike, and since 2000, the market has had a large covered area.

A market for the first inhabitants of Montreal

In the 1900s, a wave of immigrants created the Little Italy district of Montreal. The market opened in 1933. Called the Marché du Nord at the time, it met the need to feed the neighbourhood's inhabitants. It was initially open two days a week.

In the early 2000s, extensive expansion and improvement work was undertaken. As the city of Montreal grew, so did the market. Today, it is a landmark of the city of Montreal.

The market's various shops

In the centre, the market brings together fruit and vegetable producers. The incredible diversity is reflected in the colourful stalls, which are different every day. You can trust the growers, here the seasons are respected, there's no question of finding tomatoes in December...

Around the edges of the Jean Talon market, a variety of shops sell their creations. You'll find fishmongers, bakers, butchers and pork butchers, cheesemongers, pastry chefs, beekeepers, florists and restaurateurs.
