Discover a little paradise on Lake Ontario: the Toronto Islands

Relax for a day on the Toronto Islands. Just as enjoyable for young and old alike, this archipelago of land was separated from the mainland in the 1800s by a violent storm.

Today, it's a veritable pedestrian paradise. As you stroll around, you can admire the small cottages built by the island's rare inhabitants. There are 260 houses and only 700 year-round inhabitants on the archipelago.

Every year, thousands of tourists and locals mingle to go to the amusement park, play sports, spend a day paddle-boarding, go to the beach or take the children to the educational farm.

Only a few minutes from the city by ferry, the Toronto Islands are a little paradise on Lake Ontario, just a stone's throw from the province's capital. Relax and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep.

The Toronto Islands, an unspoilt and peaceful place

The Toronto Islands are an archipelago less than 2 km from downtown Toronto. This proximity is explained by the fact that they used to be an integral part of the mainland. In 1858, a violent storm separated the islands from the mainland. The islands have 262 houses and a year-round population of around 700.

The cottages on the archipelago are handed down from generation to generation. They are highly prized possessions, worth a real fortune. To buy a cottage on the Isle of Ward, for example, you need to get on the waiting list. When a house is sold, only the first 100 people on the list can buy. If no one is interested, they continue with the rest of the list.

You've got time, so to speak, so start by spending the day.

Where are the Toronto Islands?

Lake Ontario, one of Canada's five great lakes

Toronto faces Lake Ontario, named after one of Canada's 13 territories. Lake Ontario is a huge lake covering some 18,500 square kilometres. Yet it is the smallest of North America's five Great Lakes.

The waters of Lake Ontario flow into Lake Erie, forming the Niagara River and the famous Niagara Falls.

The Toronto Islands, the car-free archipelago

The Toronto Islands are an archipelago located just opposite the city of Toronto, on Lake Ontario. The 15 islands make up the Toronto Archipelago, of which only 2 are inhabited: Algonquin Island and Ward Island.

The green setting of the Toronto Islands is just 1.6 km from the city centre. Cars are not allowed on the Toronto Islands. In fact, it's the largest pedestrian zone in North America.

How do I get to the Toronto Islands?

By ferry

There are three ferry services from Toronto Ferry Docks to the islands. You can arrive on the archipelago on three different islands:

  • Centre Island
  • Ward Island
  • Hanlan Island

By water taxi

There are three companies to book a water taxi crossing. The journey is slightly more expensive than by ferry, but quicker.

What can you do on the Toronto Islands?

Playing sport with the locals

The Toronto Islands are a great place to get active. You can hire a bike, or go for a run in the shade of the trees, for example. There are a variety of sports fields: football, spikeball, frisbee, tennis, etc.

If you prefer water-based activities, you can hire a paddle, kayak or pedalo. Most rentals are on Ward Island and Centre Island. You can also hire a kayak from Toronto Island Sup, take lessons from an instructor or simply hire a paddle.

Take your children to the theme park

In the heart of Ile du Centre, children will be delighted to discover the Centreville theme park and the small farm next door. There are over 30 rides in the park. It's a fun activity for the whole family during your day on the Toronto Islands. If you have small children who can't ride all the rides, you can buy an under-4s pass.

Find prices and book your park tickets online on the Centreville website.

The park is only open from mid-April to the end of September. You can pet and feed the animals at the nearby educational farm.

Relax on the quiet beaches of Lake Ontario

There are several beaches where you can relax and take a dip in Lake Ontario. We recommend Hanlan's Point Beach. A young, relaxed beach with a great atmosphere. Toilets and showers are available throughout the island.

A walk in Canada's lush countryside

As you stroll around Ward Island, you can admire the small cottages with their very English style. A peaceful place to stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
