The Olhao Garden, a symbol of fraternity between Morocco and Portugal

The Jardin d'Olhao, also known as the Jardin du Portugal, is one of Agadir's highlights. Among the city's many green spaces, it is one of the most beautiful. This picturesque spot is intended to mark the ancient links between Portugal and Morocco. Its architecture is inspired by that of the Amazigh people of the Souss Massa region.

Lots of greenery, wide wooden paths and marble benches - that's how the Jardin d'Olhao is represented, in keeping with Berber art. It's a pleasant place to stroll with friends or family in the golden Agadir sunshine. You're bound to relax as you enter the Garden, and you can also learn more about the city's history, which is partly linked to Portugal. This place, rich in culture, will bring you tranquillity and knowledge.

The history of the Olhao Garden

The Olhao Garden was created in 1992 and has been modernised over the years thanks to the Urban Development programme. The park commemorates the links between Portugal and Morocco, and more specifically the rapprochement between the two towns of Olhao and Agadir.

If we retrace the history of the creation of this site, it was in 1505 that the Portuguese settled on the Moroccan coast. A Portuguese had built a fortress called Santa Cruz du Cap Ghir.

Why go there?

Its enchanting setting and history make it one of the most visited places in the city. During your walk you can admire the flora and cross the wooden footbridges. At the entrance to the park you will come across a small museum commemorating the city of Agadir after the 1960 earthquake. The museum houses photos of the earthquake that devastated the town, including shots of buildings that survived the tragedy and others of the destroyed city. This exhibition, which is not short-lived, simply shows the city before and after the earthquake.

As you stroll along, you can admire the various water features, green expanses and suspended walkways. The Jardin d'Olhao was mainly designed around the museum as a reminder of the city's terrible history. On the other hand, the park is undoubtedly a haven of peace, with its magnificent gardens ideal for relaxation. You'll find yourself both rested and in perfect harmony with nature and the surrounding environment, and at the same time immersed in the historical ruins of the city's past.
