The Broad, an artistic gem, inside and out (and it's free!)

Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach... When you think of a holiday in Los Angeles, these are the first places that spring to mind. Yet the City of Angels is a metropolis with an immense wealth of culture. For lovers of contemporary art, one rather recent museum caught our eye. This is 'The Broad', a building that opened its doors in 2015. It houses more than 2,000 works by renowned artists such as Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger and Takashi Murakami, among others. Not sure? The museum is completely free and open to all! No need to hesitate! Go for it!

A huge museum with free access

Flashback to 20 September 2015. The ** Broad** Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles finally opened its doors in the Downtown district after five years of construction. It takes its name from Eli and Edythe Broad, an American business couple who are the main backers of the museum, to the tune of 140 million dollars. One of the first visitors to the museum was none other than Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States.

The building is a work of art in itself, a veritable architectural gem, designed by Diller Scofido + Renfro, a Manhattan architectural firm. The museum is covered by a steel veil with multiple openings that allow the works to be illuminated naturally.

The museum comprises two floors of art galleries housing almost 2,000 works by over 200 different artists. The Broad remains one of the world's leading collections of post-war and contemporary art. Very rarely in the United States, access to this museum is completely free. This attracts a large number of tourists and Californians keen to discover the museum. More than 900,000 visitors come to the museum every year. There is also a library within the building. Although it is open to the public, tickets must be booked in advance.

Discover Angels Flights, the smallest railway in the world

Just a stone's throw from the Museum of Contemporary Art lies a curiosity in Los Angeles, a little-known tourist attraction that's well worth a visit. Welcome to Angels Flights, the world's smallest railway. Just 91 metres long. Originally, at the beginning of the 20th century, this funicular railway enabled local residents to get from Hill Street (below) to the Victorian houses at the top of the hill. Long out of use, it was brought back into use in 2017. It's an amazing activity that will delight young and old alike. Be careful, the ascent (or descent) only takes a few seconds!
