Although the Zurich Opera House changed its name in 1964, its concert hall retains its original neoclassical façade. Supported by 1,800 oak pillars, it was designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. You'll also be impressed by the entrance hall and the auditorium, built in a luxurious rococo style and seating 1,200 people. Look up to see the superb ceiling paintings depicting love, tragedy, comedy, music and poetry.
Since it opened in 1891, the Zurich Opera House (https://www.opernhaus.ch/en/) (Opernhaus Zürich) has been one of the most renowned opera houses in the world, both for its exceptional acoustics and the high quality of its performances. The building was constructed on the site of the Actientheater, which unfortunately burnt down. It was originally called the "Stadttheater", because it was used as a theatre, a classical music concert hall, an opera house and a conference hall. After the opening of the Schauspielhaus (theatre) in 1926, the focus shifted to opera, operetta and ballet. The building has undergone a number of renovations over the years to meet performance standards, but it has retained its original grandeur.
