Fort Saint-André: a fortress with an exceptional panorama

Just a few kilometres from Avignon, Fort Saint-André is on the other bank of the Rhône, in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, in the Gard department. This ancient medieval fortress boasts an uninterrupted view of Mont Ventoux and the Alpilles mountains. Its construction was the result of Philippe Le Bel's vanity, as he wanted to compete with the powerful city of the Popes opposite. The gatehouse, made up of twin towers, was built in several stages with the sole aim of commanding respect. The gamble paid off, as the height of the imposing towers testifies to the power of the owner of the site. During a visit to the fortified enclosure, there are several sites to discover, including the Belvezet chapel, the terraces and the prisoners' yard.

A little history

The construction of the fortress was initiated by Philip the Fair, who was seeking to consolidate his power in the face of Avignon and above all the Papacy. At the same time as the fortress was being built, he founded a new town on the other side of the river, which would later be given its name: Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. The building was consolidated over the centuries, then fell into disuse before completely losing its defensive role. The building was then transformed into a military base and abandoned. Worried that this historic monument would be forgotten, the town decided to acquire the fort. It has been listed as a historic monument since the early 20th century.

What is there to see?

Once inside the walls of this medieval town, you can visit the twin towers, the chapel of Notre-Dame de Belvezet and, above all, climb to the top of the ramparts for a panoramic view of the pampas and the local mountain, Mont Ventoux. The merlons, embellished with arrow slits, are perfect for poking your head through or taking a few original shots.

Let's head for the prisoners' yard on the first floor. It has a continuous barrel vault and still bears the marks of the cell's former occupants. Drawings and other distinctive signs have been carved into the stone.

The gardens were awarded the title of "Remarkable Garden" in 2014 and contain the remains of Romanesque churches. The gardens are planted with Mediterranean trees and plants. A pergola adorned with wisteria and roses sets the tone. A romantic atmosphere in the heart of Provence. A little higher up, you can see the Popes' Palace and a panoramic view of the Avignon valley. In the 13th century, Fort Saint-André became a royal abbey. After a few modifications a century later, the abbey palace retained its vaulted ceilings, the portal and an enormous staircase.

Fort Saint-André has recently introduced a booklet in FALC language: easy to read and understand. This is part of the monument's drive to improve accessibility for all visitors. Thanks to this system, people with disabilities or who do not speak French can discover the history of the site.
