Carnac, land of megaliths

The megalithic site of Carnac is the most famous in France if not Europe!

Nearly 3,000 menhirs** surround the northern sector of the town of Carnac. The megaliths have stood proudly here for several thousand years at 3 main sites.

As a result, they are an integral part of the town's landscape! The town of Carnac is now associated with its menhirs.

Nowadays, the significance of these aligned menhirs is still not clearly established...

Dreams and magic continue to surround Carnac!

Discovering the alignments at Carnac

The Carnac alignments were built between 4,500 and 2,000 BC! Located to the north of the town, they cover an area of over 40 hectares.

The alignments stretch for more than 4 kilometres, just north of Carnac-Bourg.

👉There are 3 main fields in succession from west to east:

  • The Ménec alignments: the site closest to the Maison des Mégalithes. This is the most important site in Carnac. More than 1,000 menhirs can be seen here. They are built over 1,100 metres long and 100 metres wide!

  • The Kermario alignments: another imposing alignment. The Kermario alignments are 1,200 metres long and almost 100 metres wide. There are also more than 1,000 menhirs here (1,029 to be exact). Nearby, don't miss the "Géant du Manio", a menhir that stands a respectable 6 metres tall!

  • The Kerlescan alignments: located on the westernmost part of the Carnac alignments. Although the site is smaller, it still boasts more than 500 menhirs. This is where you can see the best-preserved menhirs. If you have the chance to see them in winter, the site becomes totally mysterious on foggy days!

The Maison des Mégalithes is the starting point for your discovery of the menhirs and alignments of Carnac.

Visitors are given practical information about the park.

And don't forget thatin summer, visits must be made in small guided groups! This takes some of the magic out of the sites. But you'll learn a lot more on these surprising, anecdote-filled tours!

There is a charge for guided tours (free for children).

Conversely, from late autumn to early spring, the area is much quieter. What's more, you can discover the alignments at your own pace, free of charge!

Finally, to find out more about the famous menhirs, head for the Museum of Prehistory, a must-see!
