Jean-Jacques Waltz, nicknamed Hansi or Uncle Hansi, was born in Colmar in 1873. Throughout his life as an artist, he made a name for himself with his illustrations, caricatures and watercolours. His works depict an Alsace that is proud of its traditions, its land and its products. In his works, he gives vibrant accounts of everyday life in Alsatian villages in the last century, and has thus become a true ambassador of Alsatian popular traditions! Through his books, engravings, posters, advertisements and signs, Hansi conveys all his love for Alsace! He is best known for the characters in his book "Mon Village".
When you visit Colmar, the Hansi museum is a must for immersing yourself in Alsatian traditions. A museum, a village, a tea room, a shop... beneath its pretty, colourful facade, the Hansi Museum is a bit of all of these. The museum was created by Yannick Scheibling, the great-nephew of Jean-Jacques Waltz, aka Hansi, to pay tribute to Colmar's star painter. Located opposite the famous Maison des Têtes, the Village Hansi and its museum will enable you to discover many of the artist's works (watercolours, posters, objects, menus, etc.), which are perfectly displayed and form an integral part of Alsace's heritage. The museum allows you to fully immerse yourself in Hansi's world, with a beautiful reconstruction of a typical Alsatian village. The cobbled streets and colourful houses are a nod to Hansi's works and seem to have come straight from his imagination!
