Colmar in short

In a nutshell

Colmar is the epitome of Alsace. This town of over 65,000 inhabitants has all the makings of a picturesque little village. It's hard to beat the warmth and charm of the "French Venice". Its half-timbered houses combined with its many canals make it a real haven of peace!

The "most beautiful city in the world", according to Georges Duhamel, was founded in the 9th century and has had its share of setbacks. Fires, bubonic plague, uprisings against the royal families... During the Second World War, it experienced an intense period of Nazification, which was valiantly slowed down by numerous pockets of resistance. In the 1960s, the town took off with the construction of a port and an airfield. A few years later, it became the scene of France's Woodstock, where thousands of peace fighters turned out to see Pink Floyd in concert.

These twelve centuries of history have given the town an architectural heritage that is unique in Alsace. The Maison Adolph and the Ancienne Douane are perfect examples of the kind of architecture that has been preserved over time to embellish the town with a classical-medieval atmosphere. The Renaissance also has a place of honour, with the Pfister house and the Maison des Têtes, one of the finest bourgeois homes in the département.

Not to be outdone, Colmar also boasts a gastronomy not to be missed. Alsatian recipes have been refined over the years to produce hearty dishes that are a delight on cold winter evenings. It was here, for example, that foie gras was invented and that the best choucroutes, Kougelhopfs and the unmissable bæckeofe are produced. The wines have nothing to be ashamed of, as they are also emblematic of the region, such as Gewurztraminer and Edelzwicker.

Colmar's Christmas Markets are among the most famous in the region. There are six of them, offering top-quality local produce and fine crafts, all in the spirit of the festive season. In summer, a stroll through the Petite Venise district is a must. Trade in your car for a bicycle, or simply use your legs - the area is best enjoyed by taking your time. It's a romantic stroll that's hard to miss. Petite Venise is not to be missed. With the Lauch River running through it, this is a very pleasant area in which to make the most of the typical Alsatian atmosphere.

Rue des Marchands is home to many of the city's finest bourgeois houses. Its two superstars are the Pfister house and the Chez Hansi house. The former, built in the 16th century, combines stone and wood, while the latter commemorates the Duke of Austria's intervention against an uprising of noble families in 1538.

Colmar also boasts a number of fine religious buildings, including the Dominican Church and the Unterlinden monastery, now a museum. Here you can admire works of art from medieval Alsace.

Practical information

👉 When is the best time to visit?

Colmar can be visited all year round, each season having its own charm. Spring is the season for the first sunny strolls and for admiring the colours of the flowers that fill the town. It's also the right time of year to avoid the crowds that invade little Venice once summer arrives.

Summer is ideal if you want to enjoy the excitement of Alsace's many festivities: village festivals, wine festivals, vineyard marathons, etc. Autumn offers a magnificent spectacle in the vineyards, which are decked out in reds, yellows and oranges.

Finally, winter is a season full of magic at Christmas time, with one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in France, plenty of entertainment and the lights that fill the town.

🚌 Getting around

Thanks to the TRACE buses (urban transport in and around Colmar), you can get around easily and quickly anywhere in the town and 21 surrounding communes.

There is also a free electric "town centre" shuttle bus. These minibuses run Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 7pm, at fifteen-minute intervals. Five stop-on-demand zones, located in the pedestrianised streets near the Musée Unterlinden and in the Cathedral, Ancienne Douane, Marché aux Fruits, Marché couvert and Rue Turenne areas, allow passengers to get on and off at any time by simply waving to the driver.

For those who can, we recommend taking bicycles in the car or hiring one locally, as this is the best way to explore the streets of Colmar.

👉 Colmar City Pass

The Colmar City Pass gives you unlimited access to all the city's attractions for 7 days. It costs 32 euros.

The Colmar City Pass gives unlimited access to the 5 museums and the Dominican Church.

Access to the boats and the Little Green Tourist Train is limited to a single visit.

During the Christmas Market period, the tour on the Little Green Tourist Train is replaced by two guided tours (11am and 5pm) offered by Colmar Tourist Office.

The Pass is activated the first time you visit a partner site and is valid for 7 consecutive days. This pass is not a queue-breaker.

👉 What to bring back?

The best thing to do when you come back from Alsace, and Colmar in particular, is to take a selection of local products with you. Taking home a slice of sauerkraut will certainly be difficult, but you can easily get hold of a bottle of wine or a wrapped Kougelhopf. Slightly more kitsch, but always a hit with the little ones: Emma. This plush stork, which comes in all sizes, is an inexpensive and always fun souvenir!

lightbulb_outline Editor's tip

Between mid-February and the end of August, it's also a good idea to take binoculars with you in the hope of spotting a stork nesting on a roof or taking flight in the distance!
