Hiking in the hills above Kandy: the Hantana mountains

Just a few kilometres away by tuk-tuk, the Hantana mountain range, made up of 7 peaks, reaches a height of 1,240 metres. For a short day's hike near Kandy, there's no question of going all the way to the top of course! A walk at the foot of the mountains is enough to take in the breathtaking scenery.

Day trip to Kandy

Hiking is a great alternative to sightseeing. A breath of fresh air and breathtaking views over the valleys of Sri Lanka offer travellers a completely different experience of the city of Kandy. There is a very pleasant walk from Kandy to the foot of the Hantana mountain range, where you can still enjoy impressive panoramic views. This mountain range of 7 peaks stretches southwards to a height of 1,240 metres.

From the centre, you can use the "Pickme" and "Uber" apps to book a tuk-tuk to take you to the starting point of the walk. It's just 17 minutes from the city centre. All the drivers know it.

Watch out for the rain

Remember to bring rainwear to avoid getting soaked in the rain, especially in the late afternoon.

The Hantana trail, panoramic view of the Kandy valley

There are 3 parts to this magnificent walk:

First part:

The first part is the most difficult. After passing through the gate that leads to the tea plantations, you will discover the hiking trail. It climbs steeply at first, then becomes much less difficult. Follow the metal power cables on either side of the path to get your bearings. It's a well-marked path.

Second part:

Once you've reached the first telecommunications aerial, the grass is clear and the view is much more pleasant. Continue following the antennae, of which there are 2.

Third part:

Just before the summit, the grass is high and the path no longer really signposted. Continue uphill until you reach the summit. Here you can enjoy a dazzling 360° view of the Kandy valley.

How long does the walk from Kandy take?

It takes about 2 hours to go up and about 2 hours to come back down. Remember to take a picnic and include in your schedule a short break to eat up there. A time slot of 9 am to 3 pm seems reasonable.

Safety point:

To avoid getting trapped by the night or the late afternoon rains that are common in the heights, make sure you don't start your hike too late in the morning. A departure before 9.30am is recommended. If the weather is rainy, postpone your excursion, as the heights are often more prone to rain and mist.
