3 days to discover the natural parks of Fuerteventura

In this 3-day itinerary, we take you on a tour of Fuerteventura's 3 protected parks. We leave from Puerto del Rosario, the capital, where Fuerteventura airport is located, to visit the south of the island and head northwards. The Jandía peninsula used to be an island, but several volcanic eruptions eventually transformed it into a peninsula. Its nature park covers almost the entire peninsula. It has been a protected area since 1987, home to wild and powerful landscapes such as Cofete beach, for example. Next, we'll head up to Betancuria to discover its rural park and fall in love with this picturesque town steeped in history, with its typical Canarian architecture. Finally, to round off our trip, we'll head up to Corralejo to visit the famous sand dunes of its nature park, close to the hustle and bustle of the island's most popular tourist resort.

Day 1: Departure from Puerto del Rosario for Jandía Natural Park

Our itinerary begins in the capital of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario. It's here that we decide to hire a car so that we can move around freely and explore the most remote corners of the Windward Island. We had breakfast in Puerto del Rosario and set off in the late morning for the Jandía Natural Park. We follow the FV-02 road as it descends southwards. The journey to Jandía takes 2 hours, but we make a few stops...

On our way to the airport, we came across the magnificent plage del Mattoral, just below the airport. It's a large, wild, deserted beach with a large white lighthouse. After an hour's swim and a short stroll along the large volcanic beach, we hit the road again.

The Tarajal aloe vera farm

Fincas Canarias farms are aloe vera farms found on almost all the Canary Islands. On our way to the Jandía Natural Park, we stop off at the Tarajal farm to discover the farm's 6,000 plants and learn more about the secrets of aloe vera production.

As we walk around the rows of aloe vera plants and the explanatory galleries, our English-speaking guide explains the benefits of this incredible plant, the details of production and the products made. At the end of our visit, we pass through the shop where all the products are organic and made from Canary Island aloe vera: face cream, hand cream, shower gel, lip balm, etc. To book your visit, visit the Fincas Canarias website.

Sunset on Las Colorades beach

We arrived in Morro Jable in the late afternoon and decided to watch the sunset on Las Coloradas beach. To round off our day in style, we have dinner in one of the resort's restaurants. Morro Jable is teeming with hotels, shops and restaurants, so we had no trouble finding what we were looking for. Our choice is La Bodega de Jandía, which serves delicious tapas in a relaxed atmosphere.

Day 2: Discovery of Jandía and departure for Betancuria

Jandía Nature Park is a protected area where endemic birds and plants are king. In 1987, the Spanish government classified the park as a natural area. Today, it is a small wild paradise in the south of the island of Fuerteventura.

When we wake up, we take the car to explore the park. We drive to the Punta de Jandía headland and lighthouse. We swim in the deserted coves nearby before visiting the wild beach of Cofete. We passed a few 4x4s, but on the whole there weren't many people around. For lunch, we head north to Costa Calma, where we enjoy seafood overlooking the ocean at Restaurante Avenida del Mar.

On the way to Betancuria, we stop off at the Sicasumbre lookout, a vantage point offering one of the island's finest views of the mountains to the east of Fuerteventura. We take a moment to admire this breathtaking panorama. Then it's on to the roads that wind along the mountainsides to Betancuria. The journey takes around forty minutes.

Historic monuments in Betancuria

The town of Betancuria is located in the protected rural park of the same name. This picturesque town was one of the first to be built on the island of Fuerteventura, and is full of monuments and museums that are well worth a visit. We stroll along the cobbled streets and take photos of the whitewashed architecture, typical of the Canary Islands.

The raw nature of Betancuria Rural Park

In the afternoon, we take the car to discover the viewpoints and mountains of the Betancuria Rural Park. Covering 16,000 hectares, this protected area offers wonderful walks, beaches and canyons to discover.

For dinner, we loved the terrace at La Sombra and enjoyed a good burger under the hundred-year-old cacti. We spend the night in Betancuria.

Day 3: Departure for Corralejo and visit to the dunes of the nature park

After breakfast at our hotel, we take the road up to the northern tip of the island of Fuerteventura to discover the Corralejo Natural Park. The journey from Betancuria to Corralejo takes around 1 hour.

Miles of sand dunes

The Corralejo Natural Park is made up of dunes that move with the wind. For several kilometres to the south of the seaside resort, white sand meets turquoise water to create heavenly coves and beaches. It's a superb place to admire the sunsets. We spend the day in the dunes, swimming and relaxing in the fine sand.
