Jordan: 4 authentic experiences in contact with the locals

Travelling to Jordan means discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Wadi Rum or the Kings' Highway and learning more about world history at Petra or Mount Nebo. It's also about tasting new flavours like mansaf or zarb and basking on the shores of the Dead Sea or the Red Sea. However, many tourists are content to simply do one must-see after another, without taking the time to meet the local people, immerse themselves in their daily lives and discover their culture and traditions. Yet these moments of authentic exchange with Jordanians create unforgettable memories. It has to be said that Jordanians have a reputation for hospitality, which is typical of the people of the Middle East. So let's take the time to talk things over: here are 4 experiences to enjoy with the locals for a holiday that's all about sharing and conviviality.

1. A night with the Bedouins in the Wadi Rum desert

With its deep red sand and impressive rock formations rising out of the ground, the Wadi Rum desert is a natural treasure not to be missed. The caves, canyons and natural arches form a unique, almost unreal landscape that is well worth taking the time to discover.

A large number of local agencies organise excursions by 4x4 or camel through the glowing immensity of Wadi Rum, including one or more nights in a Bedouin camp. As the day progresses, the guide, who has lived in the desert all his life, introduces us to the various points of interest, always adding a little anecdote or joke.

In the evening, we shelter from the cold in the camp's large communal tent, and dine and chat around the fire as dusk casts a fairy-tale glow over the desert. Far from the stress and bustle of 'normal life', it's easy to get carried away in this good-natured atmosphere. We laugh, we share and we create memories that will stay with us forever.

But it's not long before the fatigue of the day makes itself felt, and it's time to go to bed. As we slip under a thick blanket in our personal tent, we know it's going to be a gentle night, lulled by the wind blowing across the sands of Wadi Rum and the wonderful moments we've shared.

2. Sharing a traditional meal with a Jordanian family

In the Middle East, gastronomy and the sharing of meals are an integral part of the culture, and Jordan is no exception. Here, eating is not just about satisfying your hunger, but also about socialising and sharing.

So if you make friends with Jordanians, it's highly likely that they'll invite you to eat at their home: it's their way of expressing their generosity and hospitality. Whatever their financial means, they will do their utmost to make you feel at home and will go out of their way to make this an unforgettable experience.

When Mansaf is served, a delicious aroma fills the air. This traditional lamb and rice dish is often prepared for festive occasions and is a perfect example of Jordanian generosity. Often served on the floor, everyone shares the same dish and the atmosphere is very convivial.

Mansaf is eaten with the fingers: you have to use the bread to catch the rice and meat and then form a small ball, all with one hand. It's a bit difficult at first, but you soon get the hang of it. Don't be surprised if your host urges you to help yourself again and again, it's his way of showing his hospitality and friendship. You come away from this meal with a full stomach and a light spirit.

3. Party the night away in Amman

The capital of Jordan, Amman is the kind of city that seems to float between the ancient and the modern. Here, you can go shopping in the historic souk or in the huge Abdali Mall. You can have lunch in a small typical restaurant or in a large international chain. You can drink tea in the local café or a cocktail in a trendy bar.

In our case, after visiting the Jabal al-Qal'a Citadel, King Abdullah's Mosque and the Roman Theatre, we could do with a drink... or two... or three... Steeped in tradition but firmly rooted in the 21st century, Amman is the perfect place to party the night away.

As evening falls on Amman, the city comes alive and Jordan's youth pours into the capital's restaurants, bars and clubs. In the old town, the Sekrab bar is one of the best spots around: on its super terrace with its relaxed hippy atmosphere, it's easy to strike up a conversation with the neighbouring tables. Young Jordanians are sociable and friendly, and happy to chat.

If you're looking for something a little more refined, the Cantaloupe Gastro Pub offers a breathtaking view of Amman. And if you're here to party, the real thing, head to the Cube, which is perhaps the best nightclub in town.

4. Discover Jordan's hidden treasures with the locals

When travelling to Jordan, most tourists are content to visit the best-known sites such as Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea or Amman. Rare are those who stray off the beaten track and set off to discover small villages or natural spots where no-one goes. Yet these forgotten places are full of hidden treasures that the locals know well... and what if we took the time to listen to them and follow their lead?

A number of agencies have set themselves the mission of helping visitors discover the authentic Jordan by working directly with the local communities in so-called secondary tourist destinations: a partnership full of meaning.
