Combine walking and discovery at the Mediterranean Forest Ecomuseum

How about a little nature break? Head for the Mediterranean Forest Ecomuseum, south of Aix-en-Provence. Both a museum and a forest, adults and children alike can learn more about the region's natural spaces: an educational trail winds its way through the pines and oaks, while a museum area shows visitors the richness and fragility of this ecosystem. Founded by the Institut de la forêt, the site's mission is to raise awareness of the environmental issues surrounding Mediterranean forests. Global warming and other human activities obviously have an impact on forests, and it's important to be aware of this. The Écomusée de la forêt méditerranéenne achieves its objective in a fun, interactive way, always being fair and never moralizing. It's a worthwhile visit, as much for the lovely walk as for the collections on display.

Why an Ecomuseum of Mediterranean Forests?

The Écomusée de la forêt méditerranéenne was founded by theInstitut de la forêt, an organisation that works to conserve natural areas, particularly forests. Working closely with local authorities, institutions and prevention organisations, it is constantly strengthening its partnerships and sharing its experience to help preserve nature. What can you do at the Mediterranean Forest Ecomuseum?

As its name suggests, the Mediterranean Forest Ecomuseum is first and foremost a museum. Visitors will discover almost 1,000 square metres of exhibits spread over three levels. The permanent collections showcase the astonishing diversity of biodiversity in the region's forests, while highlighting their fragility. The focus is on the trees, both coniferous and deciduous, that populate Mediterranean forests.

We also learn about the plants of Provence, and their role in climate change, of which they are both victims and solutions. Of course, the fauna of these ecosystems is also highlighted in this museum space. Artists, writers, painters and naturalists also give their views on the forest areas of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The walls of the Écomusée also house temporary exhibitions that reinforce the message of the permanent collection.

The easy-to-navigate route is dotted with fun features that allow young and old alike to discover the secrets of the Mediterranean forest. It's a great way to learn while having fun! Workshops for children are also organised during the school holidays, giving them the chance to learn about respect for nature and the animals and plants that inhabit it.
