Tasting the white wines of Cassis at Clos de Sainte-Magdeleine

The history of wine in Cassis goes back a very long way. It seems that since time immemorial, the people of Cassis have cultivated vines on terraces, sometimes over 150 metres high, facing the Mediterranean Sea.

Since 1936, the wines of Cassis have been an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée). Best known for their white wines, they are fresh, fine and go superbly well with Mediterranean fish.

Around Cassis, there are several renowned wineries. Among them, Clos Sainte-Magdeleine, at the foot of Cap Canaille, is a historic estate in France that has been cultivating vines since the 12th century.

Come and discover the saffron-yellow batis and the flavours of the Cassis vineyards, in this estate between vineyards and sea.

History of wine in Cassis

Cassis is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in the world. The Phocaeans, who arrived from Greece, were already growing vines on the village terraces around 600 AD. The Romans then took over and seemed to appreciate the gentle life away from weapons and close to the land.

What is an AOC?

💡 In France, certain wines have had the AOC label since 1935. An Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée is the recognition of certain characteristics in a wine. They are framed by the appellation decrees, which delimit the geographical limits, the rules for grape varieties and their proportions, the rules for yields, practices, production, etc.

Each year, winegrowers must have their AOC wines tasted by professionals from the region, to ensure that the wine is similar to wines from the same appellation, and thus confirm the identity of the AOC.

Le Clos de Sainte-Magdeleine , a family estate

Clos de Sainte-Magdeleine is a vineyard at the foot of Cap Canaille, just a few metres above sea level. This waterfront estate specialises in producing exceptional white wines, one of the best in the appellation. With the Organic Farming label, the winemaker creates wines rooted in their terroir and authenticity.

👉 Ploughing the estate's land with a draught horse

Sainte-Magdeleine has decided to return the land to the ancestral technique of ploughing with a draught horse.

As well as creating a bond with the animal, the winemaker avoids soil compaction, the use of fuel and many other negative consequences. This method has been used in agriculture for thousands of years.

👉 The estate's white wines, as iodised as the sea

The scents are an aromatic palette of white flowers, citrus fruit and iodine from the Mediterranean.

The wine has a lovely roundness and a good balance between iodised touches, notes of honey, aromas of white flowers, vine peach and citrus fruit. These are elegant, classy wines.

The Clos Sainte-Magdeleine offers guided tours of the winery. As the tour progresses, you will discover the history of the Clos.
