At last! You've just landed in Cuzco, nestled in the heart of the Andes, the Inca capital rises to an altitude of 3,390 metres. Whether you're resting after a long-haul flight or acclimatising if you're prone to altitude sickness, you'll love the comfort of a few days in a cosy hotel before setting off again on the hiking trails or to discover new things.
In Cuzco, you'll be spoilt for choice: Luxury hotels in remarkable historic buildings dating back to the Spanish colonial period, small hotels with authentic charm or dormitories in youth hostels** - it all depends on your taste and budget. However, while it is possible to find a room for less than €10 a night, the first thing to check is that it has a window and hot water.
It's in the historic centre of Cuzco, around the Plaza de Armas, or on the slopes of the picturesque San Blas district that you'll really want to set down your suitcases. Virtually all the city's attractions can be found here: cafés and restaurants, travel agencies, markets...
Here are our 10 favourite places to stay in the centre of Cuzco.
