Manù National Park

Manú National Park (Parque nacional del Manu) is a protected area that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Located 200km north of Cuzco, it extends over almost 2 million hectares, at the crossroads of the tropical Andes and the Amazon Basin, between altitudes of 300m and 3800m (Apu Kañajhuay) this park is an absolute refuge for biodiversity. Immersed in the Puna of the high Andes, the montane cloud forests, the luxuriant lowland rainforest, along the Rio Manù and Rio Madre de Dios rivers, you can admire no fewer than 20,000 species of endemic plants, 250 species of trees, 200 species of mammals, 1,000 species of birds, 1,200 species of butterflies, and countless reptiles, amphibians and insects. Whether you're a botany enthusiast, an animal lover or a great adventurer, this is the trip for you: wonder and adrenaline guaranteed! It would take weeks to explore this incredibly rich and diverse park, but to capture an unforgettable sample, plan at least a 4-day excursion.

How do I get to Manù National Park?

From Cuzco you will have to travel 220km (minimum 10 hours by bus) towards Pilcopata, the gateway to Manù Park.

The Manù national park is divided into 3 zones:

  • The national park (15320km²), completely preserved for the indigenous ethnic groups, some of whom have no contact with the modern world and maintain a "hunter-gatherer" lifestyle, such as the Yoras, Mashko-Piro, Matsiguenka, Harakmbut, etc.

Only a few agencies are licensed to take visitors to this part of the national park(Aecotur: Asociación de Empresas constituidas Operadores de Turismo al Parque Nacional del Manu). You should allow at least 7 days on site, as the area is much less accessible.

  • The cultural zone (1200km²), where non-native populations live from various agricultural, forestry and fishing activities.

  • The reserved zone (2570km²): where you can visit more easily over a few days, reserved for guided tourist activities and supervised research in the lower reaches of the Rio Manù between Pilcopata and Puerto Maldonado.

All the local tour operator agencies in the centre of Cuzco, Plaza de Armas or av El Sol offer this excursion, so you can compare offers and prices (from €300 to €800).

Don't be an arachnophobe or insectophobe if you want to explore the roads and rivers of Manù national park and the Amazon Basin in general, unless it's therapeutic!
